UPCOMING EVENTS
The STEP Board will be holding a conference on New Research on the Operation of the Patent System on October 22, 2001 in Washington, DC. Research commissioned by the STEP Board following their February 2000 conference on "Intellectual Property Rights: How Far Should They Be Extended" will be presented. Confirmed speakers include Hon. Q.Todd Dickenson, Howrey Simon Arnold & White, Hon. T.S. Ellis, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Mark Rohrbaugh, NIH, William Davidow, Mohr Davidow Ventures, and Lewis Gruber, Arryx, Inc. Descriptions of the commissioned research, draft agenda, and online registration can be found at

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
The Christine Mirzayan Internship Program of the National Academies is accepting applications for its January and June 2002 sessions. This Internship Program is designed to engage graduate and postdoctoral students in science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions among science, technology, and government.
There are two sessions each year: January ( 12 weeks) and June (10 weeks). To apply, candidates should submit the application and reference forms available on the Web at http://national-academies.org/internship. The deadline for receipt of materials is November 1 for the January program and March 1 for the June program. Additional details about the program and how to join that program's mailing list are also available on the Web site.
