NOTE: DATA HAS BEEN UPDATED IN A RECENTLY RELEASED REPORT, "Trends in Federal Support of Research and Graduate Education." Additional data unavailable in the report can be accessed here.
As part of an assessment of U.S. industry performance, the STEP Board undertaken an original analysis of the changing composition of Federal research and development investment in the last decade.
The federal R&D analysis charts changes in research agency budgets and in support of major research fields and subfields since 1992, when the total federal budget began to fall as part of the effort to reduce the federal budget deficit.
Both analyses rely primarily upon data collected by the National Science Foundation, which has recently released data from 1997.
