S&T Parks Overview
At the request of the management of Sandia National Laboratories, the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) organized a workshop on Laboratory-Industry Cooperation: The Role of Science and Technology Parksas part of the STEP project on Government-Industry Partnerships for the Development of New Technology.
The goal of the workshop was to review recent experience with S&T Parks in other regions of the US economy, examine the assets Sandia brings to cooperation with the universities and the private sector, and discuss the Sandia S&T Park proposal. Specifically, the event was intended to do four things:
- convene some of the best regional economists in the country to review the factors contributing to successful regional high-technology cooperation;
- review the origins and discuss Sandia’s current S&T parks proposal;
- identify key factors to take into account, such as university-industry linkages with local government and the laboratory (including topics such as worker training, internships, etc.); and
- assess the policy challenges that the Sandia management will need to address in areas such as park governance, fee structure, licensing arrangements and access for foreign firms.
The meeting was held on Wednesday, April 22, 1998 in the Board Room of the National Academy of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.
