The National Research Council's Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) held a conference, America's Industrial Resurgence: Sources and Prospects, on Monday and Tuesday, December 8 and 9, 1997 at the National Academy of Sciences, 2100 C Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
As part of a two-year project on innovation and industrial performance, the STEP Board commissioned leading scholars to prepare comparable analyses of twelve manufacturing and nonmanufacturing industries, examining the sources of improved competitiveness and changing structure, including the relative importance of public policy influences. This conference reviewed the results with the authors, industry executives and other non-academic experts, and federal policymakers. The analyses are collected in the report, U.S. Industry in 2000: Studies in Competitive Performance, and is available from National Academy Press.
