Meeting #5 February 15-16, 2007

The fifth meeting of the National Research Council’s Committee for the Study of Teacher Preparation Programs was held on February 15-16, 2007 at the National Academies Keck Center, 500 5th Street NW Room 100, Washington DC. Meeting #5 Agenda

 

Meeting #5 Synopsis: Open sessions were held on both days. Roundtable discussions were held Thursday, February 15. The morning session discussion was titled “Necessary Components of Mathematics Teacher Preparation and Specific Practices in Mathematics Teacher Preparation.” Discussion leaders were Sybilla Beckmann (Univ. of Georgia), Jim Hiebert (Univ. of Delaware), and Paul Sally (Univ. of Chicago). The afternoon session was titled “Necessary Components of Science Teacher Preparation and Specific Practices in Science Teacher Preparation.” Discussion leaders for this session were Rodger Bybee (BSCS), Mark Windschitl (Univ. of Washington), and Robert Yager (Univ. of Iowa). On Friday, February 16, the committee heard from presenters on “State and Regional Analyses of Teacher Preparation: New Research Findings.” Presentations were given in the morning by George Noell, (Louisiana State Univ.) on the Louisiana Board of Regents Evaluation of Teacher Preparation; Kent Seidel and Robert Yinger (Univ. of Cincinnati) on the Ohio Teacher Quality Partnership, Tim Sass (Florida State Univ.) on the Florida Pre-Service Teacher Preparation Data; David Wright (CSU System) on California State University Evaluation of Teacher Preparation; and Pamela Grossman (Stanford Univ.) on the New York Pathways Project. The afternoon presentations, Focus on Professions, were given by Steven Brint (UC Riverside) on an Historical Perspective: How Professions Have Emerged; and Lee Shulman (The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teacher) on a Comparative Perspective: Results of the Carnegie Foundation Study.

Meeting #3 June 21-23, 2006

The third meeting of the National Research Council’s Committee for the Study of Teacher Preparation Programs was held on June 21-23, 2006 at the National Academies Keck Center, 500 5th Street NW Room 201, Washington DC. Meeting #3 Agenda

 

Meeting #3 Synopsis: Open sessions were conducted on Wednesday, June 21, and Thursday, June 22. During the open session on the morning of June 21, the committee discussed issues surrounding study questions 1 and 2: Who enters teacher preparation programs? What instruction and coursework is offered in teacher preparation programs? The afternoon open session held two panel presentations followed by questions and discussion. During Panel 1, presentations were made by Robert Yinger, Jim Wyckoff, Karen Hammerness, Pam Grossman, and Susan Moore Johnson on the methodological issues in describing preparation programs. During Panel 2, presentations were made by Kate Walsh and Raven McCrory on the methodological issues in describing courses and course outcomes. Thursday June 22, the afternoon session was open to the public for a presentation by Edward Crowe, consultant to the committee, on the question topic: What Model for Data Collection Can Provide Good Information on the Success of Teacher Preparation Graduates?

 

Meeting #2 March 21-22, 2006

The second meeting of the National Research Council's committee for the Study of Teacher Preparation Programs in the U.S was held on March 21-22 at the National Academies Keck Center 500 5th Street, Washington, DC. Meeting #2 Agenda

 

Meeting #2 Synopsis: Day 1 focused on small group discussions pertaining to the sponsor-designated questions. Lyn Countryman, a teacher and member of the NRC Teacher Advisory Council (TAC) was welcomed to the committee. Dr. Countryman will act as the liaison between TAC and the Study of Teacher Preparation Programs by participating in the meetings. Group topics included: assessing how programs teach reading, describing teacher preparation candidates and programs, and improving data and research. On Day 2 a brief bias and conflict session was held. The licensure and accreditation presentations were reviewed. There was discussion of teacher preparation in mathematics and teacher preparation in science.

 

Meeting #1 December 7-8, 2005

The inaugural meeting of the National Research Council's committee for the Study of Teacher Preparation Programs in the U.S. was held Wednesday and Thursday, December 7-8, in Washington, DC. There was an open session on Wednesday, December 7, from 1:00-5:30 p.m. in the Lecture Room of the National Academy of Sciences Building. Meeting #1 Agenda.

 

Meeting #1 Synopsis: The first closed session was dedicated to the bias and conflict discussions required of all NRC consensus studies. The scope, statement of work, and timeline were reviewed. An open session was held the afternoon of day one to present the cogent issues surrounding teacher preparation: effective and best practices, and expectations of both teachers and teacher preparation programs. Day 2 discussion focused on reviews of the presentations and research and data limitations and needs issues.
