China-U.S. Bilateral Science and Technology Data Seminars

The USNC/CODATA has hosted a series of bilateral seminars to provide U.S. federal government and academic data experts with a unique inside view of China’s S&T data programs and an opportunity to initiate collaboration in various related areas. As a direct result of these meetings and subsequent discussions, the Chinese government is proposing major revisions to its S&T data policy that may result in a more open regime of data access.

November 29-December 1, 2004: Washington, DC
A Chinese delegation visited the United States to meet with U.S. government officials and information policy experts to conduct research for a comparative study of scientific and technical data policies between the United States and China. These meetings offered insight into U.S. federal government policies on access to scientific data, the general U.S. legal framework for accessing and protecting such data, federal government policies for access to data and information produced with government funding by grantees, and U.S. policy regarding the international exchange of scientific data.

22-24 June 2004: Beijing, China
Strategies for Preservation of and Open Access to Digital Scientific Data
was an interdisciplinary forum that endeavored to promote a deeper understanding of, and requirements for, long-term preservation and open access to digital scientific information resources in China.

13-15 October 2003: Beijing, China
A return visit of five U.S. data policy experts took place in China to help the Chinese liberalize their data access laws, policies, and practices with regard to both government scientific data and data produced by academics through government-funded research.

A five-member delegation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other Chinese government agencies visited the United States to meet with U.S. government officials and information policy experts to conduct research for a comparative study of scientific and technical data policies between the United States and China. The USNC/CODATA organized and coordinated the delegation’s agenda in the United States.
