Renewed Energy Research: IIASA’s Global Energy Assessment
José Goldemberg, IIASA associate research scholar and co-president of the Council of the Global Energy Assessment (GEA), has been awarded the Blue Planet Prize, in recognition of his contributions in formulating and implementing policies associated with improvements on energy use and conservation. Time Magazine also recognized Dr. Goldemberg as one of its Heroes of the Environment. In the late 1970s, Goldemberg pioneered in showing the world that fuel can be clean and renewable.
Robert Corell, the Director of the Heinz Center's Global Change Program Office, will head the IIASA GEA-established U.S. Support Office at the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. The Heinz Center will oversee and encourage broad U.S. participation in and support of the Assessment.
IIASA and other supporting organizations presented their proposal for a Global Energy Assessment in May 2006. The GEA, in which NMO Committee member David Victor has been involved since its earliest stages, is a central element in IIASA’s renewed energy research program.
