USNC/IUGG

Meetings

The USNC holds committee meetings twice a year. IUGG holds General Assemblies at four-year intervals, and each of its Associations organizes Scientific Assemblies as well as topical symposia in the intervening period between General Assemblies. A representative of the USNC attends the association assemblies.

U.S. Committee Meetings

Meetings of the U.S. National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics are open by invitation only. The next meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Past Meetings

December 4, 2005, San Francisco, CA
At the meeting, the committee discussed plans for the International Year of Planet Earth and began organizing symposia on communicating scientific uncertainty and capacity building.

March 25, 2005, Washington, DC
At this meeting, the committee finalized their position paper on the International Year of Planet Earth.

International Congresses and General Assemblies

IUGG 2007 General Assembly
The next General Assembly of the IUGG will be held July 2-13, 2007 in Perugia, Italy, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year. The local organizing committee is headed by the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection-CNR in Perugia.

32nd International Geological Congress (IGC)
The 32nd International Geological Congress of the International Union of Geological Sciences was held in Florence, Italy, August 20-28, 2004. The Congress was designed to create a forum for the broad debate of the most significant advances in the geological sciences, to foster new ideas and models for implementing a close interplay between pure science and its applications, and to promote discussion of the Congress theme: “From the Mediterranean Area Toward a Global Geological Renaissance: Geology, Natural Hazards, and Cultural Heritage.”

23rd General Assembly of IUGG
The 23rd General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics was held June 30 to July 11 in Sapporo, Japan. Among distinguished scientists and representatives of its member organizations, IUGG was pleased to have Japan’s emperor in attendance at the General Assembly. The U.S. delegation to the assembly was led by Dave Jackson, who was the current chair of the USNC and was elected to the IUGG Finance Committee. Delegations from every country met during the Congress to hear reports from officers and to vote on resolutions submitted by member delegations. The delegates also participated in congress debate, symposia, and workshops.
