International Congresses and General Assemblies

33rd International Geological Congress
The next International Geological Congress will be held August 5-14, 2008 in Oslo, Norway.

6th Open Meeting of the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Research Community
The 6th open meeting on Global Environmental Change took place at the University of Bonn, Germany October 9-13, 2005. The theme of the conference was “Global Environmental Change, Globalization, and International Security: New Challenges for the 21st Century.”

32nd International Geological Congress (IGC)
The most recent International Geological Congress of the International Union of Geological Sciences was held in Florence, Italy, August 20-28, 2004. The Congress was designed to create a forum for the broad debate of the most significant advances in the geological sciences, to foster new ideas and models for implementing a close interplay between pure science and its applications, and to promote discussion of the Congress theme: “From the Mediterranean Area Toward a Global Geological Renaissance: Geology, Natural Hazards, and Cultural Heritage.”

Eight members of the USNC/IUGS, Grant Heiken, Mark Cloos, Farouk El-Baz, Suzanne Mahlburg Kay, Susan Landon, Patrick Leahy, Eldridge Moores, and Larry Woodfork, served as the U.S. delegates to the International Geological Congress. Committee member Eldridge Moores was elected Vice-President of the IUGS Executive Committee. The delegates also participated in congress debate, symposia, and workshops.

31st International Geological Congress
A delegation of members from the USNC/IUGS attended the 31st International Geological Congress held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2000. The General Assembly of the IUGS met during the Congress to hear reports from officers and to vote on resolutions submitted by member delegations.

geoscience in Iraq, geoscience and national security, megacities, the costs of publishing and its effect on science, petroleum geology, the International Year of Planet Earth; and the International Geoscience Program (IGCP), and began planning a sustainability symposium at the 2006 World Congress of Soil Science.

2006 GSA Annual Meeting and Exposition
The 2006 Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Geological Society of America will be held October 22-25, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with the theme: “The Pursuit of Science—Building on a Foundation of Discovery.”

AOGS 3rd Annual Meeting
The 3rd Annual Meeting of the
Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) will take place July 10-14, 2006 in Singapore. AOGS is a catalyst for bringing together Asian and international scientists from Europe and the Americas who seek to develop partnership with them and to share their accumulated knowledge and experience.

Joint AGU, GS, MB, MSA, and SEG Assembly
The 2006 Joint Assembly of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Geochemical Society (GS), Microbeam Analysis Society (MS), Mineralogical Society of America (MSA), and the Society of Exploration Geologists (SEG) will be held May 23-26, 2006 in Baltimore, Maryland.

2006 AAPG Annual Convention
The 2006 Annual Convention of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists will be held April 9-12, 2006 in Houston, Texas with the theme “Perfecting the Search—Delivering on Promises.”

PHI International Symposium on the History of the Oil Industry
Former USNC member Larry Woodfork was the chairman of this symposium, which was convened by the Petroleum History Institute (PHI) April 6-9, 2005 in Morgantown, WV.
