Committee Activities
USNC/MI Sponsors Information Sessions at NCTM 2008
The USNC/MI supported three information sessions during the 2008 NCTM in Salt Lake City from April 9-12. 2008. The first session served to introduce NCTM attendees to the USNC, its functions, goals, and the service it can provide to the mathematical community. USNC/MI members Francis (Skip) Fennell (McDaniel College), and Gail Burrill (Michigan State University) led the second session, which provided an overview of ICME-11. Joseph Rosenstein (Rutgers University) moderated a panel on the final session entitled “Renew yourself by teaching math in a foreign country.” Panel members included Cathy Seeley, Stuart Moskowitz, Diane Schnell, and Kristen Miller. A version of the final session will also be presented at ICME-11.

2008 Summer Workshop Highlighted the Impact of Classroom Assessment
USNC/MI member Sadie Bragg for Discussion Group 23 (DG-23): Current Problems and Challenges in Non-University Tertiary Mathematics Education (NUTI) at ICME -11, led a one-day workshop entitled, “Classroom Assessment: The Impact on Teaching and Learning in NUTI,” on Monday, July 14, 2008, after the ICME Congress. Workshop participation included invitees from several of the countries represented at the Congress.
Funded by the National Science Foundation and co-sponsored by the USNC/MI and the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), the workshop will further explore the topic of classroom assessment.
