Introduction to the Center
The J. Erik Jonsson Center, located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, is a year round conference facility that has for many years, served as a meeting center for the National Academy of Sciences. Originally a private summer residence and purchased by the Academy in 1975, the Center now welcomes a variety of scientific, educational,. and corporate meeting groups. Rooms have been refurbished to accommodate conference needs while maintaining the original character and charm. Office equipment and supplies have replaced bedroom furnishings and linens; parking spaces occupy the former area of lawn tennis; conference and chairs are where a livery once stood. Servants have been replaced by trained conference staff; electric lights are where candles and kerosene lamps once flickered. Formal breakfasts, lunches and dinners have given way to more relaxed, though elaborate, buffet service at meal periods; and cars travel the driveway once traversed by horse and carriage. However, the feeling upon entering the gate is very much the same - that of traveling back to a more serene relaxed way of life in a very remarkable setting. The property boasts magnificent views of Quissett Harbor and Buzzards Bay and can accommodate groups ranging in size from 5 to 75.
The Jonsson Center is well equipped with computers, audiovisual equipment, and office supplies to ensure the requirements of each group are met. Staff members are readily available to answer questions and assist where needed. Meeting rooms are designed for optimal comfort and efficiency without sacrificing the relaxed feel of a Cape Cod style retreat.
Woods Hole, home of the internationally renowned Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, is no stranger to visitors from all over the world, particularly scientists and educators from various disciplines who meet, conduct research, and exchange views. Leisure activities abound with boating, bicycling, swimming, and shopping being the most popular. The ferries to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are located just minutes away. The Center maintains a shuttle service providing transportation to local hotels, restaurants, and attractions at no charge.
